1. Dussehra festival is an important hindu festival celebrated with religious fervour in all parts of the country. In Karnataka this festival is also know as  “nadu habba “i.e state festival .

The festival is celebrated for the first 10 days and 9 nights(waxing moon ) in the month of Ashwija/Ashwin

In South India ,  it starts with a doll festival which is known as Bombe Habba (in Kannada)/ Bommai Kolu (in Tamil) and Bomma Golu (in Telugu). On the first day of festival following Ganapathi pooja, dolls are displayed on a rack of shelves.The display  is predominantly based on  depictions from Purana’s, court life, royal procession, ratha yatra, weddings, everyday life etc. In the evenings, women and children within the neighbourhood invite each other to visit their homes to view the doll displays, they also exchange gifts and sweets. The 8th day is celebrated as Durga Astami. This is the day when Goddess Durga killed demon Mahisasura . It signifies triumph of good over evil. The 9th Day is celebrated as Maha Navami / Ayudha Pooja. On this day Arjuna (the Pandava) is supposed to have  retrieved  his  hidden weapons from the Shami/Banni tree performed Ayudha Pooja and used them to defeat  Kauravas  . The 10th day is celebrated as Vijaya Dashmi , On this day Lord Rama (the seventh avatar of Vishnu) killed Ravana, to rescue Sita. In north India this is celebrated by burning of effigies of Ravana. This day is considered as the most auspicious day. House warming, buying of vehicles, household articles, inaugurating new businesses are done on this day.

In Gujarat on all the nine nights of Navarathri Dandiya Raas a traditional folk dance is performed to celebrate the  lila (tales) of Lord Krishna and Radha at Vrindavan.

In East India this festival is celebrated as Durga Pooja with great devotion. Each day prayers are offered for all 9 forms of goddess Durga as mentioned below:
